MY HOME

My hometown is Olympia, Washington, located just about 30 minutes South
of Tacoma and home to the state capital. While some elements are highlighted to
show Olympia's commitment to connecting the community to natural spaces, the
main focus of the map shows the three parks that were my favorite when I lived
in Olympia and the bike path that I used to get there.

Primary data was sourced from Thurston County GeoData Center and Washington State's Geospatial Open Data Portal

Figure 1: There was significant distance between the area where I lived and my local park, Woodard Bay (top right & figure 2), and the forementioned downtown parks (bottom right). Since public transportation didn't reach my house and biking on a road where the speed limit is 50 and there are no bike lanes/sidewalks was extremely dangerous, the Chehalis Western Trail (orange line) provided me with a paved and safer alternative.

Figure 3: Even though I lived in an unincorporated part of Olympia which was much more rural, I spent the majority of my life in the downtown and East side of Olympia where the majority of the shops and businesses were.

Figure 4: Two of the three top parks of mine in Olympia were Priest Point Park (above) and West Bay Park (bottom right). Both of these parks had a waterfront view of downtown Olympia, but from different perspectives.
